How to make a collar to fit a your top

As promised - this is how to make - (or how i made) a collar to fit my old green cardigan. Its simple and should only take about an hour. Once you have made the template, even quicker. I hope you find it helpful. See what you think and if i have missed out anything...

So firstly choose your top

Using some tracing or thin paper, make your template by drawing out how you would like your collar to look around the neckline. I did mine with a rounded collar edge. You only draw to half round the back of the neck as later you will be cutting on the fold.
make sure you are happy with how it looks. Obviously you can make it smaller or with a pointed edge, its up to you
 choose your fabric.....
laying your template on the fold of the material and cut round. cut out leaving half an inch round
Cut it out, then use that one as your template to cut out the other side. You can use the same fabric, but why not make it reversible.....

pin the two pieces of fabric together with the right sides facing.
Sew round half an inch into the edge (then it will be just like your template!)
Leave about 5-6 centimeter at the center of the back as you will need it to turn it right side out
Turn it right side out, give it a good iron and sew up the gap you left to turn it right side out
and there it is. one top 3 different looks. You can use little safety pins to keep it in place.

If i have not explained this well or have a question then please do leave a comment.

  1. It is very pretty. Would you add a ribbon to it so you can tie it on? I can just see this with a bow.
