Being Ginger..

Last night I was watching Raised by Wolves and it brought up what it's like to grow up as a red head and being a ginger woman. I think I may have blogged on it before, not just because of course my business is called Miss Gingers, but because being ginger can make life very hard at times.
In this Episode we see Aretha deciding she no longer wants to be home schooled (she wants to learn and is very smart) Going to school is very hard when you have red hair. In this episode you see the Head Teacher recommending she dye her hair so she has an easier life. you can watch the episode here. I do think its a great show too. It is also not far from the truth as I have a friend who had the same experience with their daughter at primary school!
For me being ginger meant quite a lot of bullying at school, men thinking it was ok to shout out nasty comments as they drove by - often with a sexual bias. A 'friend' at college who told me that if her baby had red hair she would give it away. The people who when I was pregnant said 'oo I bet you hope it doesn't have red hair'.  I have even had a little 7 year old girl with beautiful ginger locks ask me 'does it get easier?' when I replied yes she asked me to promise that it did.
I have grown to love my red hair and am proud to be Miss Ginger, but I still get cross when I hear ginger jokes and I know how it can have such a negative impact on your self image and confidence. I think of the little girl who asked me if it gets easier when I hear ginger jokes and think how it has made her feel.
The documentary 'being ginger' also shows what a negative effect being ginger can have, here is a little clip of the documentary here.
I would like to finish with something more positive - so hear are some beautiful ginger people!

Celebrating gingerness!
Love Miss Ginger

  1. Goodness, it's real isn't it. I don't see it down here at all- it gets mentioned and that nonsense about red heads having a temper still hangs about, but nothing even close to this. I remember when we were all hennaing our hair like mad too, to be like you! I love red hair, I love that it is a proper colour unlike most of us with vague browny drab variations on mud. I am sad that people can be so tiny minded too.

  4. I love red hair! My mum. brother and (late)sister all had red hair; my daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren have red hair; my uncle and grandfather were red-headed. Sadly I missed out, but I'm glad you love your colour ..... you're SO lucky!
